Delicious and Healthy Banana Soy Breakfast Smoothie

I've been on a health kick for awhile now, eliminating foods in my diet that don't serve my best interests and adding things that do; like leafy green vegetables, omega 3 rich salmon, and my latest homage to wellness, soy milk.

I have to admit, though, that I was more than a little leary about doing it because, well, it's soy.

But after reading about the benefits this elixir of liquid health has to offer, I broke down and decided to to give it another try.

Along with hitting the gym or the pool five days a week and getting to bed on or before 11 pm everynight, I've also started using whole wheat bread products and pastas more often, eating less salt and sugar and opting for foods in vibrant colours.

With all that put together, I have to tell you, I've been feeling pretty fabulous.

The biggest change of all, though, has been breakfast which is where the smoothie comes in.

I read a really good article a few months ago about balanced living and eating to sustain a healthy body weight. The gist was nothing new, but for some reason, this time it just stuck. Eat about every three hours, small power packed meals and snacks and have some kind of protein with each one. This because protein has this miraculous power to help make you feel full. And eat breakfast.

Some mornings I like to do a poached egg on whole wheat toast with two strips of turkey bacon (Oh how I adore my turkey bacon) and sliced canteloupe. Other days it's a high fibre cereal or oatmeal, and others it's my soy smoothie. I've discovered that putting the same kind of care and attention into breakfast as I do other meals really kickstarts my day and sets me up for feelings of enhanced wellness throughout.

This morning it was the following smoothie with a piece of whole wheat toast and some non-hydrogenated peanut butter and oh my YUMM! It was FABULOUS. The smoothie honestly tasted like a banana shake.

Here's the recipe... I hope you'll try it and enjoy!

  • One cup Silk Plus Omega 3 DHA soy milk (or other soy milk - but this one packs the most punch and Silk, to me, tastes the best)
  • One banana
  • One small container or 3/4 cup fat free vanilla flavoured yogurt
  • One tbsp wheat germ
  • 2-3 ice cubes
Put all ingredients in a blender and mix until smooth.

  1. I am on the health bandwagon as well...I am working towards eating better, with using brown rice, whole grains, fruit and veggies and proper portion sizes when it comes to meat. I actually had 2 poached eggs with 3 slices of turkey bacon and 2 slices ww toast for dinner last night! Then I proceeded to eat a small bowl of ice cream...baby steps...lol...I have a goal of going to the gym 3 times a week right now and try to do some kind of exercise on the weekend which is way more than I was doing before which was nothing! I have to fit nicely into my bathing suit by the end of January as we are going to Cuba or Cancun havent decided which, but all I know is that I have to look better than I do if I expect to get on that beach!!

  2. How exciting!! We can be on our health kicks together - that way when we do finally meet we'll be both looking even more fabulous than we do already!!!

Night time after dinner is the toughest. I've been using a trick I learned watching intervention to combat false hunger. I figure if it can work for a heroin addict it can work for me... I tell myself, "That's just the addiction talking, it wants to be fed. If you don't feed it you will kill it so it's fighting back right now." Psychologically that little technique works well for me. Maybe I'll blog about it...
